Willie Hugh Nelson (april 29, 1933) is an American country songwriter, singer, and guitarist. The critical hit from his album Shotgun Willie (1973), alongside Red Headed Stranger (1975) and Stardust (1979), made Nelson one of the most renowned artists in country music. Born during the Great Depression and raised by his grandparents, Nelson composed his first song at the age of seven and joined his first band at the age of ten. During his high school years, he acted as a singer and guitarist for the group Bohemian Polka. After graduating, in 1950, he joined the Air Force, but was rejected due to back problems. During the 1980s, he formed the supergroup The Highwaymen with Jennings, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson. In 1982, he released Pancho & Lefty, an album with Merle Haggard produced by Chips Moman.47 During the recording of Pancho & Lefty, guitarist Johnny Christopher, co-writer of "Always on My Mind", attempted to have Haggard record a version of the song. Nelson, who was aware of Elvis Presley's version, asked him to record it. Produced by Moman, the song was released as a single and gave the title to a self-titled album. The song peaked at number one on the Hot Country Songs chart and five on the Billboard Hot 100, its best record throughout its long career. The song also won three awards at the 25th Grammy Awards, in the song of the year categories, best country song and best male country vocal performance. The single was certified platinum, while the album was certified quadruple platinum and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.48
