In this video we are going to discuss dot plots, what are dot plots and how to construct a dot plot graph.

A dot plot is a graph where each data value is plotted above the horizontal axis. They show the viewer a distribution of the data, as well as any high or low values.

For instance let’s say that this data set was the number of daily subscribers gained for a youtube channel over a 3 month period. We could construct a dot plot from this data set.

The first thing we need to do is draw a horizontal axis, basically a straight line going from left to right with arrows pointing out at each end. Next we need to find the lowest and highest values in the data set. The highest value is 80 here, and the lowest value is 23 here. So, our scale needs to go from 23 near the left end of the axis and 80 near the right end of the axis. We can make a mark for both of these on the axis line.

Next we need to make a mark for all of the values between 23 and 80 on the axis line like this, making these marks equal distances from one another. And we will put the numbers under every 5th mark from 25 upwards to 80 to make the graph easier to read.

Now that our axis line is completed, we are ready to start plotting the data values on the graph above the axis. Our first value is 33, so we will put that just above the 33 mark on the axis, like this. The next number is also 33, so we will plot that above our first dot like this. And we will continue to plot the points and if there are multiple values, we will continue to stack them above one another as you see in the graph.

Once we are finished, you can see this gives a nice visual representation of the data, with most of the data points lying between 40 and 55.

There are many software programs that will create nice and clean dot plots as you see here is the dot plot for this data set that I generated in excel.
