WisEye Morning Minute: Legislators Introduce 'Our Farms, Our Future' Package

On September 3, legislators held a news conference to introduce the "Our Farms, Our Future" legislative package which aims to strengthen opportunities for Wisconsin farmers at every stage of their careers. Rep. Mark Spreitzer (D-Beloit) introduced a bipartisan bill that addresses beginning farmer student loan assistance, LRB 1388. Rep. Spreitzer highlighted that in two recent nation-wide studies of young farmers conducted by the National Young Farmers Coalition, "53 percent of respondents were currently farming, but struggling to make their student loan payments and nearly 30 percent did not pursue farming or were waiting to start farming because of their student loan debt."
