Ear wax removal is necessary when ear wax build up becomes impacted. Symptoms causes by earwax blockage include: earache (otalgia), conductive hearing loss, blocked ear, vertigo, tinnitus, itchiness and irritation, occlusion etc.
The client attended with hard and fully occluding ear wax in the left ear. The outer layer of ear wax in particular was extremely hard and it was therefore not possible to obtain a sufficient suction grip.
I subsequently used a St Bart’s ear hook in the hope of prising the ear wax out. However, the deeper inner core of earwax was a bit softer, and therefore the ear hook simply sliced through the earwax. Quite often people comment, “why don’t you use the ear hook”. Well, this is a classic example as to why the ear hook is not always as effective as some people may think whilst sitting on their armchair!
Nonetheless, I was able to obtain a slightly better suction grip on the earwax, which was also slightly matted, thereafter but the remaining lump of earwax was lodged in behind the isthmus. The isthmus is a narrow juncture near the eardrum. The earwax was wedged behind this narrowing, making it difficult to remove. I again tried using an ear hook! However, once more it was not effective at removing the large lump of earwax. In addition, one needs to be carefully when using the ear hook this deep in the ear as it can come in contact with the eardrum when trying to insert over and behind the earwax.
I therefore resorted to some olive oil ear wax drops for several minutes. This provided natural lubrication of the ear canal and also softened the earwax enough to obtain a full and powerful suction grip.
