Dear Astha - I am very good at stitching dresses. I can copy any design and my work is appreciated by everyone. Until now I am doing it only for my daughters and now would like to start some business of my own. Please suggest how can I take this forward. So here are a few suggestions for all of you girls out there who stitch or knit:
Opening your own boutique is one of the classic old options that can be done easily. If you have space, hire a person or 2 and you are good to go.
If you don’t have a lot of space and you just wish to do it on your own then you can sew some traditional dresses or superhero costumes that kids can wear for their fancy dress in schools. You can either sell them or rent them out as per your choice. A lot of parents look for fancy dresses as schools conduct a lot of such competitions these days.
If you want to keep it simple, you can just take up alteration only garments. A lot of boutiques either deny alteration or charge a hefty amount for it which gives you a lot of scope in it.
You can also get into making cute and pretty traditional dresses for Gods and Goddess Idols. A lot of temples need dresses to change at a regular basis and we also need such costumes for our own idols or murtis at home.
You could also specialise in just wedding dress designing. It is such a stressful time for the bride and she needs a specialist to take care of all the latest designing. You could be the designer for her and charge an affordable amount.
You could start teaching sewing both online and offline as a lot of ladies wish to learn this art.
Pet industry is booming these days and a lot of people get cute outfits stitched for their pet dogs and cats. However, still there are not a lot of people doing this and this could be a huge opportunity for you.
You can also start making soft toys, kids’ custom clothing, converting simple bed sheets into designer ones with embroidery, infant clothes, baby blanket sewing, tote bags, storage bags, book covers, designer handmade clutches, fashionable maternity clothes, beach wear, designer curtains and many more. The options are numerous, you just have to find the right fit.
