Marking With Distractions: When Rewarding Is Beneficial Dogs just loaded up next to us.
Hunter saw them go by and still smells them.
So he's focused on that.

I can tell that a treat isn't important to him.
Will he take one?
Yea.
But then he'll turn right back to those dogs.

So I wait until he finally finishes gathering all relevant information and CHOOSES us.
Then let him take care of his basic of needs.
Peeing.
Now I KNOW his mindset has changed and WE add a group are important to him.

Now I can use the treat as a reward.

For a treat to be effective, they need to be receptive in accepting one.

His motivation isn't food.
It isn't toys.
It's gathering information.
