Piggy Back Trains. Indian Railways is aiming for 100% Electrification of its entire Network by the year 2025. Electrification is under progress at a very fast rate across all the Zones of Indian Railways. Due to Railway Zone separation a few routes are partially electrified, which calls for a need of two different traction to operate trains. Indian Railways has now adapted the Piggy Back system where Trains run with Electric Locomotives from its source and a Diesel Locomotive will be attached in front of the Electric loco only for the Diesel portion of the Trains journey. The diesel Loco will be detached once the Train covers the un-electrified route and switch back to Electric loco for the remaining part of its journey.
This is very helpful on routes where electrification is done in bits and patches. This helps Indian Railways cut down cost on fuel and also time saved on multiple loco changes.
Indian Railways is also manufacturing a Dual Traction mode Loco called WDAP5 which can run on both Diesel and Electric . The locomotive is being manufactured by Diesel Locomotive works , Varanasi and is expected to come into service by March 2020.
