Whakaari/White Island is an active andesite stratovolcano situated 48 km from the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, in the Bay of Plenty. The island covers an area of approximately 325 ha, which is only the peak of a much larger submarine volcano

Nearly 18 million acres of land have been burned -- most of it bushland, forests and national parks, which are home to the country's native wildlife. Nearly half a billion animals have been affected by the fires in NSW alone and millions of them are potentially dead, according to ecologists at the University of Sydney.
