Popular diabetes medicine to cost less as Swiss-major loses patent

In good news for over 72 million diabetics in India, cheaper versions of the popular anti-diabetic drug Vildagliptin, have hit the market December 10 onwards. The new generic versions of the drug are expected to cost half the amount as Vildagliptin. This comes after Swiss-major Novartis-owned Vildagliptin lost its patent on December 9. Following the drug’s patent expiry, the prices from the tablets are expected to drop to Rs 6 per tablet, from the existing Rs 20-25.
