There are just about ten days left until North Korea's unilateral year-end deadline is up,... for the U.S. to restart nuclear talks with a new approach that will satisfy the regime.
Leader Kim Jong-un apparently raised the issue in a meeting of military officials, and referred to "important military steps" to be taken to bolster the regime's security.
This all comes amid speculation that the North may soon launch another missile provocation.
Kan Hyeong-woo reports.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un recently held an expanded meeting of the Central Military Commission of the North's ruling Workers' Party, discussing ways to enhance the regime's military capabilities.
Pyeongyang's state-run Korean Central News Agency reported Sunday... that in this meeting, held on an unspecified date,... Kim gave an analysis and briefing on what he called the "complicated internal and external situation."
Kim reportedly said the meeting would decide on important organizational and political measures... "as required by the fast-changing situation and crucial time of the developing Korean revolution."
The meeting also dealt with what the report referred to as core matters for "the sustained and accelerated development of military capability for self-defense."
Sunday's report, however, did not include any details about what decisions were made.
The meeting came amid speculation that North Korea could soon restart its nuclear and long-range missile tests.
Pyeongyang and Washington held working-level talks in October but achieved no meaningful results.
North Korea has been testing missile engines while the regime's high-ranking officials have publicly criticized the U.S. for not coming up with a new approach to the talks.
Washington has warned Pyeongyang against such provocations,... urging it to come back to the negotiating table.
But the regime has not responded to such offers, saying it's up to Washington to decide what its gets as a "Christmas gift."
