The 2 main cultural attractions of the island are the fishing village of Fiskardo and Assos with its Venetian castle. The main three natural attractions are Melissani underground lake, Drogarati Cave and Myrtos Beach, the latter is regarded as one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean. The film, Captain Corelli's Mandolin was shot on the island itself, and helped Kefalonia to become more widely known.
Kefalonia is a popular vacation destination due to its beautiful beaches and its natural environment, but less crowded compared to other Ionian islands like Corfu or Zante (Zakynthos).
There are various beaches, pebble or sandy, most of them are strecthing several hundred meters (or some kms), and you can often find places to hide away from crowds. In our travel video you can have a look at the following beaches: Myrthos, Agia Kyriaki, Petani, Agia Eleni, Xi, Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos in Lassi, Avithos, Lourdas, Koroni, Skala, Limenia, Poros, Antisamos, Foki.
Other places of interest: Assos village, Fiskardo village, Argostoli town, Melissani Cave and Drogarati Cave.
