A ban on single-use plastics Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi planned to introduce on October 3, 2019, has been scrapped for the time being amid fears it would be too disruptive at a time the nation is facing an economic slowdown. The proposal had been for a law to be implemented by 2022, banning a range of plastic items including bags, disposable cutlery and straws. India generates thousands of tonnes of plastic waste each day, adding up to more than 3 million tonnes per year, according to the government’s latest estimates.
