The medieval centuries saw the Sabbath as point of controversy between various branches of Christianity. Some leaders, especially those who looked to the church hierarchy in Rome for direction, were intent on eliminating Sabbath observance entirely. Others, whose loyalty bound them to the church officials in Constantinople, saw the Sabbath as a celebration of both creation and redemption. Contrasting views of the Sabbath, along with other issues, led to a division of the Christian world that lasted for 900 years.
Hosted by Hal Holbrook. 47 minutes.
