Eliud Kipochoge breaks marathon barrier with race completed in under 2 hours Olympic runner Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya blew through one of the most challenging barriers in sports, completing a marathon in under two hours. He ran the Vienna, Austria course in one hour, 59 minutes and 40 seconds in an event specifically set up for the attempt. Since it wasn't an open race, Kipchoge's accomplishment isn't an official world record.
