Windows 10 Build 18965.1005 - A Large Cumulative Update!

Windows 10 Build 18965.1005 - A Large Cumulative Update! On August 21, Microsoft released Windows 10 Insider Preview build 18965 to the Fast ring, not including much in the way of new features. Just a day later though, a cumulative update for the build is rolling out. KB4517787 brings the build number to 18965.1005.

As noted in the blog post, this cumulative update doesn't include anything that's new, although Microsoft did say that the size of the update will be a little bit larger than a standard cumulative update. According to Brandon LeBlanc, who penned the blog post, the sole purpose of the update is to test out the servicing pipeline for big updates.

This is nothing new. With almost every major release of Windows 10, there are a few Fast ring builds that get cumulative updates. After all, servicing is one of those key things that need to be tested, since it has to work properly when the update is available for the general public.

Windows 10 build 18965 really only had one new feature to begin with, which is that users have more control over apps restarting at sign-in. There's a revamped Feedback Hub as well with some UI changes, but that update is rolling out more broadly.

Another week has gone by, which means it's time for another new Windows 10 20H1 preview build for Fast ring Insiders to check out. This week, Insiders can get their hands on build 18965, which includes a new setting for controlling app restarts, as well as several general fixes and improvements. The release notes also detail the recent updates to the Feedback Hub app that were revealed earlier this week.

WHAT'S NEW?
CONTROL OVER RESTARTING ps at sign-in
● As some of you already know, apps have the ability to register for restart, which helps in a few situations, including enabling you to get back to what you were doing if you need to restart your PC. Previously this option was tied to the “Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device” option under Sign-in options in accounts settings. We’ve heard feedback that some of you would prefer more explicit control over when Windows automatically restarts apps that were open when you restart your PC, and with 20H1 we’re bringing that option to you.

Windows now puts you in control with a new app restart setting. When turned on, Windows automatically saves your restartable apps when signing out, restarting, or shutting down Windows, and restarts them next time you sign in. This setting is off by default and you can change it any time in Settings 🡺 Accounts 🡺 Sign-in options and can find it by searching for “restart apps” in Start or the search box.
