How to Access NACDA's Restricted Data

How to Access NACDA's Restricted Data The National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging (NACDA), located within ICPSR, is funded by the National Institute on Aging. NACDA's mission is to advance research on aging by helping researchers to profit from the under-exploited potential of a broad range of datasets.

NACDA acquires and preserves data relevant to gerontological research, processing as needed to promote effective research use, disseminates them to researchers, and facilitates their use. By preserving and making available the largest library of electronic data on aging in the United States, NACDA offers opportunities for secondary analysis on major issues of scientific and policy relevance.

The NACDA staff represents a team of professional researchers, archivists and technicians who work together to obtain, process, distribute, and promote data relevant to aging research.

Transcript: How to Obtain Restricted Use Data

Restricted Data can be found in our "Search" tab.

The study page will indicate that it is "restricted data."

Restricted data cannot be downloaded directly from our website. The use agreements for restricted data require that we collect some extra info from potential users prior to allowing access (mostly for tracking purposes).

We have about 20 restricted studies with varying requirements for accessing.
Some require an IRB and some only require a completed agreement form.

Let's take a closer look at MIDUS, one of our most popular studies with restricted data versions.

MIDUS has a few studies that have restricted data:

Go to our homepage and click Search, Restricted Data

Use the search bar to type keywords and click on the study link.

Click on the "Access Restricted Data" button.

And press "Continue" to download the Request for Restricted Data Form

Print it. Read it. Fill it out. Sign it. Scan it and email it to
icpsr-nacda@umich.edu.

When we get your form, we review it. If it looks good, we will email you and have a time-sensitive encrypted link sent to you so you can download the files.

After you download the data, you will have to request a time-sensitive password through email from the data services specialist.

You can complete the downloading process with the password. This process takes about 2 weeks.

Then you can use the data and write your publications! Send us your publication citation when you're done so we can link your work to the studies on our website!

For each study, be sure to read the terms for applying and accessing - different studies may require additional steps.

With any restricted data access - if the terms you applied under change, such as your institutional affiliation, you should submit an updated/new agreement.
