ヤハウェ・エロヒム（エールの複数形、日本語では主なる神と訳されている）がアダムとエヴァをエデンの園から追放した理由は、知恵の樹の実を食べた人間が、生命の樹の実までも食べて永遠の生命を得、唯一絶対の神である自身の地位が脅かされる（ユダヤ伝承では知恵の樹の実と生命の樹の実をともに食べると、神に等しき存在になるとされているので）事を恐れたためである。
