THE OMANI'S ARE BACK AND THREATENING TO PROCESS THEIR LAND

THE OMANI'S ARE BACK AND THREATENING TO PROCESS THEIR LAND Kilifi residents living in fear after the return of Omani's who are threatening to process their land Thousands of locals in Coast are living in fear after the landlords from Oman threatened to reprocess their land in the region. Following the fear the National Land Commission has urged residents of Kilifi to be patients as the commission was still engaging the Omani’s as it tried to solve the land matter. Speaking in Marafa, Magarani Sub-County,NLC Kilifi county coordinator Mrs. Ummi Kughula said that the Omani’s had the right to the land since they were issued with title deeds in 1908 by the British colonialists. The commission she said had proposed that the owners sell the land to its current inhabitants at a fee of between Sh. 400,000 and Sh. 500,000 per acre but the landlords turned down the offer. “Negotiations are still on and the matter will be solved. The Omani’s got the 1908 ordinance titles that are still valid under our laws,” said Ummi “We know our people and the status they are in, they cannot afford the figures proposed by the Omanis but we shall persuade them to lower their demands,” she said. She also said that so far the NLC through various organizations is making rounds to create awareness to residents on the value and importance of land. According to Mzungu Ngoma the Institute of Participatory Development (IPD) who organized the Mafara meeting that spearheads education on land rights in Malindi and Magarini Sub Counties said the current inhabitants have been paying rent to the absentee landlords for decades and the initiative to buy the land will help solve the century long matter. He said that his organization will continue to fight for the land rights of the locals so that the historical injustices were addressed. “1908 upto date the land lease given to the Omanis is over and the national government through the NLC should now reprocess the land and subdivide it to the locals living on the particular land,” said Ngoma. The Omani's were allocated the land along the ten mile coastal strip for free by the Sultan of Zanzibar and they fronted their own proposal of selling the land between Sh. 4 million and Sh. 9 million per acre. Tenants raised complains after the land rent increased from Sh. 1000 to Sh. 11,000 per month. Dama Kambi a resident from Marafa said that awareness on issues relating to land should be spearheaded by everyone to the locals including leaders and other organization so as to keep residents aware on what is happening concerning land matters.
