Philippines Deals With Bumper Mango Harvest

Philippines Deals With Bumper Mango Harvest Market sellers in the Philippines were today (Wed) trying to shift millions of mangoes after a bumper harvest due to warm weather.
The surplus of more than 10 million pieces, or 2 million kg, of the fruit has been caused by the El Nino warm phase which has lead to dry, hot weather in the region.
Agricultural Secretary Emmanuel Pinol said that emergency measures would be put in place to battled the ''unusual increase'' and prevent the massive crop from rotting and going to waste.
Pinol said the surplus was due to ‘’a bumper harvest of mango following the long dry spell caused by El Nino which precipitated profuse flowering and fruiting this season’’.
Footage shows street traders in Quezon City, Manila, selling the fruits for a reduced price of 25 Pesos per Kg this afternoon.
The Agricultural Secretary said that one measure in the campaign ‘’Metro Mango’’ to sell the fruit was slashing the prices.
The island of Luzon, the most populated area of the Philippines, has been most severely affected by the mango bounty due to the weather conditions in that specific region.
Some farmers have even been giving mangoes away for free, by hanging them on the gates outside their property.
