Whenever I speak with a UPSC aspirant, which happens is very frequently, this is one question that is always asked to me, and people believe that there should be a very easy or blanket answer for that, which is actually not there. The question is “how to select an optional?” Those of you who are not familiar with the UPSC pattern or not very familiar with it, let me tell you in brief that in the UPSC Main Examination, the Mains, there are 2 kinds of papers according to the pattern. 4 papers are of GS, 2 papers are of an optional, and one paper is an essay. These are the papers the marks of which actually count. There are 2 other papers as well of languages but they are not added. So, GS counts for 1000 marks, optional counts for 500 marks and essay counts for 250 marks. So out of your one thousand seven hundred and fifty marks, the optional subject that you are going to select will be of 500 marks. So that’s a very big contribution especially because in GS everybody tends to study the same thing. You might be studying from different sources but at least there is some kind of a commonality in the preparation of GS because of course the curriculum is the same. So Optional can become a very big differentiator in your marks so you have to be very cautious about selecting your optional. You can go to the UPSC website and try to find out there is a huge list of optional that you can choose from. You have to pick one. There were days earlier when you could choose 2 optional subjects, but now there is only one optional you have to select. Watch the video to learn more
