The exercise will be conducted in two phases. The first phase includes anti-submarine exercises, live firing drills, naval helicopter operations, and basic to advanced-level exercises for carrier borne fighter aircraft. The second sea phase will take place off Djibouti later in the month, according to the Indian Navy. The harbor and sea phases of the exercise are aimed at sharpening skills for naval operations for both sides across the broad spectrum, with increased focus on tactical scenario. Both navies will also send sea riders to each others' ships to foster mutual understanding and interaction. Named after Hindu sea god, 'Varuna' - the joint Navy exercise between the two countries, first commenced in 1993 and since then has played a key role in strengthening relations of India and France.
