Terre d'Hermès Parfum Review: A Sophisticated Gentleman's Evening Scent
Hermès released Terre d'Hermès Parfum in 2009, three years after the 2006 eau de toilette version.
[00:55] Part 1: Composition
Though this is the parfum version of Terre d'Hermès, that doesn't only mean that it's stronger. The composition is also slightly different from the EDT version.
In the head, we find grapefruit and blood orange, thick & only while very sweet and citrusy.
Next, the heart brings patchouli, flint and pepper.
Finally, in the base are oak moss and benjoin upon a sandalwood foundation. Sandalwood is a warmer, more rounded wood compared to the cedar that appears in the EDT.
[01:41] Part 2: Seasonality
Paul finds that this scent sits on his skin as more of a winter & early spring scent. Meanwhile, CP finds it to suit autumn. While this parfum is of the woody spicy family, it has a ping of citrus.
[03:00] Part 3: Wake & Strength
Although a parfum is stronger than an EDT, we found Terre d'Hermès Parfum to be disappointing in this aspect. The sillage, or wake of scent behind the wearer, is only about a meter to a meter and a half. Next, the projection is quite tight; the scent bubble is smaller than you'd expect.
The longevity is longer than the EDT, but most of that duration is essentially skin scent. Therefore, if you want people in the same room to smell it, you'll have to reapply frequently anyway.
[03:47] Part 4: Feedback
Though Paul doesn't find this scent as nice as the EDT version on his skin, he hasn't gotten any negative feedback so far. CP has been following the community debate on Terre d'Hermès EDT vs. Parfum vs. EDP, and there are two camps on this.
One says that the EDT is much livelier, with a stronger presence. Meanwhile, those on the Parfum side place it as a more mature, refined, well-rounded scent.
[04:42] Part 5: Impressions
We find the Parfum's profile very refined and sophisticated fragrance, while not overpowering. Therefore, a man in his 40s and beyond could definitely benefit from this scent.
This parfum came out when Charles-Philippe was 18, and for him it was an aspirational fragrance. He smelled it and thought, "this is what I want to wear when I'm an adult." However, nowadays he smells it and still doesn't quite feel ready for it.
As far as formality goes, an older accountant or lawyer could pull off wearing this to work in the cooler months. Otherwise, it's an excellent formal evening fragrance, a "black tie in a bottle."
Onto masculinity, the oily grapefruit head, earthy patchouli and sandalwood with benjoin add up to a conventional masculine character.
[06:08] Part 6: Presentation
We both find the box and bottle impressive. The bottle has the Hermès H on its bottom. In order to spray, you simply slide the outer part of the cap down to reveal the atomiser. You don't have to worry about accidental sprays; the cap has a nice click when closing, and stays in place.
The box has a tasteful chocolatey brown tone with refined yet eye-catching high-contrast sans serif lettering.
From batch number DDAAP, this bottle was about $220 USD for 200ml.
