Liverpool news : Liverpool could spend significant sum on major transfer deal despite Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool news : Liverpool could spend significant sum on major transfer deal despite Jurgen Klopp The Reds are on course for another trophy-less season despite the enormous progress made on the field in the last 12 months. As demoralising as that may be for fans, Klopp is convinced that this team will continue challenging for major honours for years to come. To do that, it may require a few more additions when the window re-opens this summer to bolster their ranks. According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool could still spend a significant sum on no more than a couple of players. That’s despite Jurgen Klopp already telling supporters that they should not expect similar amounts of cash to be spent this time around. In 2018 they smashed two transfer world-records which saw Virgil van Dijk (£75million) and Alisson (£65million) complete switches to Anfield to form their defensive spine. “I don’t want to talk exactly what we will do, but I don’t think this is a team at the moment where we have to spend the big money, or whatever,” he said last month at Melwood. “The best way to do it is bring together a group of players, try to develop them altogether and then stay together for a while. And that was maybe the main problem of Liverpool for the last decade.  “When they had a good team after a season they went all over the world. That will not happen this year for sure.” The German is confident that he has now made the club a final destination for their top players, where before it was inevitable they’d be picked off by Real Madrid or Barcelona. In recent seasons there has been more of a strategic approach to incomings, evident last summer when only four new faces arrived at Anfield in Alisson, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri. Although an appraisal will be held at the end of the season, there are two areas that are most likely to be addressed when the window reopens.  Roberto Firmino has operated as a false-nine impeccably for the majority of Klopp’s tenure, but a goalscoring striker is believed to be high on the priority list which could see the Brazilian drop back into a deeper role. Timo Werner could be available as the German runs down his current contract at RB Leipzig, he has just one year remaining on his deal which could force the club to cash in. A centre-back could also be on the agenda, this year the Reds have had to rely on Joel Matip after injuries to Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren. Matthijs de Ligt’s name has been in the frame because of his impressive partnership with Virgil van Dijk for the Netherlands, it would take a huge fee to prise him away from Ajax amid interest from Europe’s elite.
