US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe addressed Japan Self-Defence and US military forces after carrying out an inspection of the Japanese destroyer Kaga, in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo on Tuesday.
Abe praised Japan-US relations by saying that "the Japan-US alliance has become more robust than ever under the great partnership that I and President Trump have developed. The fact that we stand together on board of JS Kaga today is a testament to such a robust alliance."
Trump pointed out that "this is the only port in the world where an American naval fleet and an allied naval fleet are headquartered side-by-side. The American and Japanese sailors stationed in this bay are living testaments to the enduring power of our incredible partnership."
The US president also mentioned the planned purchase of F-35 fighter aircraft by Japan, and declared that it "will give Japan the largest fleet of F-35 of any of our allies."
Trump shared his sympathy with the victims and victims' families of the stabbing attack that took place on Tuesday morning in Tokyo, where a man reportedly stabbed at least 16 people, most of them children.
Trump is due to return to Washington D.C. on Tuesday, following a four-day visit to Japan, where he held talks with Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and met the new emperor.
