WATCH: Rep. Lawrence asks Attorney General Barr to 'stay woke' on hate crimes Democratic Rep. Brenda Lawrence of Michigan asked U.S. Attorney General William Barr why the Justice Department has prosecuted fewer civil rights cases -- including those that address hate crimes, police bias, and disability rights -- than the Obama and Bush administrations.

"I'd have to see those figures," Barr said, saying that some of the data provided by the Democratic congresswoman, particular the data on hate crimes, "is simply not true."

Barr agreed with Lawrence that the number of hate crimes is increasing.

"I am very concerned about hate crimes," he said, adding that data he's seen have shown an increase since 2013. But he hasn't seen any data that show it's different under the Trump administration.
